Vampire Lore & Origins

Vampire is an undead predator that frequents the edges of human settlements and the dim reaches of old forests and cellars. In field notes one records an absence more than a form: the air tightens and cools as if a room has been opened to night itself. Smell: a faint metallic tang—like old coin or torn copper—sometimes threaded with the sick-sweet of stale wine or damp linens. Sound: whispers of silk, a soft rasp of breath, the occasional flutter as if wings were folded against a wet stone; at close range the teeth make a minute clicking, patient and deliberate. Temperature: an unnatural chill that centers on a person or doorway, like the cool undercroft of a chapel; flesh near it goes numb to the touch. Observe with care—vampires are methodical, preferring the slow work of predation to wild frenzy.

Vampire Encounter Protocols & Field Notes

Observations
  • A localized and persistent drop in temperature combined with a metallic scent and, in many accounts, two small punctures or unusual pallor appearing on a living person's neck.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not travel alone after dusk in places known for sightings; never invite an unknown visitor across thresholds; keep well-lit rooms, and traditional repellents—garlic, mirrors, salt, and iron—near sleeping quarters. Avoid sealed rooms with stagnant air where the chill can concentrate.
  • defense: Traditional and field-tested measures include exposure to direct sunlight (which weakens or destroys in most tales), immobilization (folk method: driving a wooden stake through the heart), binding with iron or salt, and public burning of remains to prevent return. Sacred symbols and ritual prayers are also reported as effective in many communities.
  • offering: Appeasement is generally discouraged; where communities sought to placate restless dead, they left out small foodstuffs (milk, eggs) or performed nightly rites rather than direct offerings of blood.

Vampire Abilities & Powers

  • Blood Bond
Seals a psychic link by draining a victim's blood, healing the vampire while binding the victim's will and allowing remote sensing of their life signs.
  • Mistwalk
Sheds corporeal form to flow as a choking mist that slips through bars, beneath doors, and evades mundane harm for a short time.
  • Mesmeric Glare
Fixes a target with an uncanny stare that clouds judgment and can compel small favors or an invitation to cross a threshold.
  • Revenant Resurgence
If not definitively destroyed, the vampire can return from shallow graves or its crypt-anchored resting place after a cycle of nights.

Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Vampire

  • Sunlight Burn
Direct sunlight sears the vampire's flesh and disperses mistform, incapacitating or destroying it depending on intensity.
  • Stake Through the Heart
A solid stake driven through the heart pins the vampire to death-like stillness and prevents immediate resurrection.
  • Decapitation
Removing the head severs the animating bond and is the most reliable method to halt revenant resurgence.
  • Garlic Repellent
Strong-smelling garlic irritates and repels the vampire, breaking close-range influence and making entry into spaces difficult.
  • Sacred Implements
Consecrated symbols or rites disrupt the vampire's mesmeric effects and can force it to retreat or lose control of thralls.
