Selkie Lore & Origins

Selkie — Trickster (Fae): a seal-born shapeshifter that moves between surf and shore with the wary grace of a marine predator and the restless curiosity of a human. Smell: brine and crushed kelp, a faint tang of fish oil and driftwood smoke. Sound: a wavering, high seal-call that can resolve into a low, melancholic human whistle or laugh; when near, the surf itself seems to answer. Temperature: touch like cold tidal water—clammy, brisk, and quick to fog breath in the air. Field notes: they leave tidy piles of kelp, smooth stones warmed by sun, and damp footprints that stop where the waves begin; encounters are brief, poignant, and patterned like tides.

  • mischief: Selkies are rule-bound tricksters: they may swap tokens, hide a fisherman's gear, or take a seal-skin to compel a bargain. Their mischief is rarely violent but can be heartbreaking—locking someone into a life they never chose if the skin is kept from them.
  • interaction: Approach with respect and small, clear offerings; never block the tideline. If a skin is found, returning it is the surest way to avoid entanglement. Speak plainly, avoid promises you cannot keep, and allow them a path back to the sea.
