Sound: a low, grinding rumble—part purr, part distant thunder—punctuated by the rasp of claws on wood and the sudden hush that follows its passage. Temperature: though the world around it freezes, the Yule Cat seems to radiate a dry, animal heat that steams in the cold air. Field notes: look for oversized pawprints pressed deep in packed snow, tufts of wool snagged on fences and gates, and the uncanny absence of newly made garments in some houses.
