In field notes she is described as the slow patience of clay and root: the smell of damp loam, peat, and crushed leaf; the sound of a deep, distant rumble like settling stone and the faint susurrus of roots grinding; a temperature that is steady and cool at the surface with a hollow, subterranean warmth beneath.
