Mamlambo

Mamlambo is a Deity — a river goddess and sentient current in Xhosa lore, often described as a vast, sinuous presence under the water whose surface glints like wet coal. Smell: the bank takes on a metallic dampness, wet iron and muddied reed-scent with a trace of sweet rivergrass. Sound: a low, pulsing churn beneath the surface, as if a distant bell is muffled by water; insect and bird calls fall away in a widening hush. Temperature: the air near her favoured pools grows noticeably colder and clammy, a living chill that clings to skin. Field-naturalist tone: observed signs include oil-dark reflections that break into crescent ridges against the current and an unnerving stillness among surface life—fish skitter, aquatic plants bow, and the river breathes slower where she lingers.
