Penanggalan

Penanggalan is a hostile spirit-Vampire: by night the head of a woman detaches and drifts through the dark with a halo of trailing filaments to hunt the vulnerable. Field notes: Smell — a sharp, metallic tang of old iron braided with the sweet smoke of burned incense; Sound — a soft, wet rustle like cloth dragged through water and the faint, uneven flapping of unseen wings; Temperature — the air around it chills unnaturally, dew forming on surfaces and breath fogging on otherwise warm nights. The creature is most active near childbirth and in poorly lit quarters, moving silently until it draws near enough for its presence to be felt as a cold, oppressive hush.
