Trolls Lore & Origins

Trolls are towering, terrestrial monsters of northern fells and coastal crags — hulking, muscular forms that move like landslides. Smell: a damp, earthen musk with old wool and brine, as if caves and fjords breathe through them. Sound: low, resonant grunts, the grinding scrape of stone and the cracking of branches under immense weight; their approach is felt before it is seen. Temperature: bodily heat is slow and heavy rather than quick — they give off a persistent, stubborn warmth that makes the air feel still and oppressive around their bulk. Field notes: they favor shadowed ledges, collapsed ruins and hidden glens where their mass is masked by terrain; many tales record sunlight as an enemy of their kind, and a preference for isolation over confrontation.

Trolls Encounter Protocols & Field Notes

Observations
  • Freshly overturned boulders, broken cairns, deep parallel ruts in soft ground and the hollow echo of low grunts at dusk.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not approach suspected lairs. Keep to open ground and high exposure where sunlight reaches; travel in daylight when possible and avoid narrow ravines at dawn and dusk. Move quietly but steadily—surprise and sudden movements invite attention.
  • defense: First priority: retreat to safety and sunlight. Use fire and clear light to disorient and deter; create noise and obstacles to slow a pursuit. If forced to defend, aim to escape rather than engage in close quarters—use terrain, elevation and engineered barriers to offset their strength. Avoid baiting or taunting.
  • offering: Optional: in some local traditions a small leaving of food (salted meat or smoked fish) or a carved token at the outer boundary of their territory is said to placate them — approach such measures only with local guidance and caution.

Trolls Abilities & Powers

  • Sunlight Petrification
Direct exposure to sunlight calcifies flesh and bone, turning the troll into immobile stone within moments.
  • Night-Regrowth
In darkness a troll rapidly regenerates lost limbs and recovers grievous wounds that would kill ordinary creatures.
  • Stone-Caller
Trolls can uproot or command nearby boulders and bedrock to batter, block, or bury foes with uncanny strength.
  • Bridge Warden's Curse
A troll guarding a pass can impose a binding toll or curse on those who refuse payment, causing misfortune and slowed fortune until recompense is made.

Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Trolls

  • Direct Sunlight
Exposure to unshaded daylight causes immediate petrification into stone.
  • Running Water
Trolls will not cross flowing water and are weakened or disoriented by torrents and rivers.
  • Open Flame
Sustained fire disrupts their regenerative flesh and can force a troll into retreat or permanent injury.
